Spinal joint pain may be due to various reasons, for example herniated discs, spinal degeneration, arthritis, and so on.
1. In case of severe pain, promptly schedule an appointment with your doctor to figure out the cause(s).
2. If your body is currently overweight, try your best to lose those excess pounds (kilos) as soon as possible; do not put off.
3. To alleviate pain, it is okay to take pain relief medications for a few days as needed in the short term. (It is best not to take painkillers longterm as most have side effects that may cause other issues.)
When afflicted with joint pain along the spine, there are a few self-care things that one can do:
- Warm up the area in pain (or cool it down if the affected area seems hot).
- Use your hand to press and massage with medium pressure around the area in pain.
- Get regular and adequate rest & sleep.
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet; be sure to have enough vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients for your body (in particular calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and omega-3).
- Be committed to an appropriate, consistent, and adequate exercise program. Your main objectives are to adjust bone joints, tendons, and ligaments back to their proper positions and to stimulate the flow of meridians (vital energy pathways), such that nerves, chi, blood, and nutrients can reach cells in the affected area and nourish them.
Eastern medicine subscribes to the following principle: "When there's free flow, there's no pain; when there's pain, there's lack of free flow." When all areas and parts of our body are free from obstruction, in general there would be an absence of pain. On the contrary, if there are blockages somewhere along the line, pain is bound to be present.
I wish you diligence in taking good care of yourself, with increasing flow and health every day.
