Poem by Ly Binh Son: "Beauty Queen"

Beauty Queen

Up on stage, the lights shine bright,
Below, the eager crowd awaits in sight.
Today, a beauty queen will be crowned,
What man can stay with heart unbound...

Many lovely figures dazzle on this day,
Refined noses, sparkling eyes, smiles that sway.
Ivory hands, slender and fair,
Graceful steps, like a goddess' flair.

Praise from all, each with words of acclaim,
But to me, your beauty outshines the same.
Though you may not fit the beauty queen's mold,
Know you not that you’re the most beautiful queen I behold?

And here's another version for good measure and your reading pleasure:

Beauty Queen

Upon the stage, in lights so bright,
Amidst the crowd, their gaze alight,
Today's the pageant, beauty's quest,
No man can stay, his heart unpressed.

Each graceful form, a vision fair,
With nose so fine, eyes bright and rare,
Lips curved in smiles, so sweet and true,
Hands ivory, like buds anew.
Their slender feet, on stage they tread,
Like fairies dancing, dreams ahead.

The crowd applauds, their voices rise,
But in my eyes, your beauty lies.
Though not a queen, by others crowned,
In my heart's realm, you're truly found,
A beauty standard, none can claim,
My queen of hearts, forever's flame.

Poem by Ly Binh Son: "Being Human"

The following is one of the poems I wrote in the 1980s in Vietnam; I was able to retain it and would like to share with you. I believe that human beings deserve to have happiness, whether while living or on one's deathbed.

Being Human

Heavenly realm is quite divine
A tinge of sorrow ne'er intertwined
Hellfire's brimming with suffering
Knowing naught of loving.

As for the earthly world
Packed with anguish and tragedy
Chockful of love and happiness
Darkness and brilliance together be!

Fortunate to be human beings
It behooves us to show kindness and compassion
Be keen on rooting out wickedness
In bliss immersed when we return to dust.

Poem by Ly Binh Son: "The Moon and A Star"

The Moon and A Star Once upon a new moon, the night sky starkly dark, A shimmering celestial star flickered away, Quite full of herself, believing she was highest above all: - “How I’ve shone the way for countless people!” Dark nights passed, a waxing crescent soon arrived A feast for the eyes of the world, the moon gently smiled Her light faint and fading, the night star grew even more envious While the clear moon carried on with tender grace. The orb on this sixteenth night of the lunar month was dazzling Cast your gaze upon the moon, recalling A time of adolescence, of similar phase as the current moon You were still pouting with jealousy, like that star of old…

"The Yellow Dress": Poem by Ly Binh Son

I wrote this poem several years back, originally in Vietnamese, under a special circumstance. May our lives be blessed with love.

The Yellow Dress

You come to visit in a new dress
Sunny chrysanthemum hue adorning life
Vibrant and youthful, a freeing soul
Helping me forget unsparing tribulations of it all

In view of your beauty, my heart flutters with delight
Welcoming a new day's arrival in places far and wide
Loving you, I'm fond of all your likings
I love your yellow dress too, my darling...
